Remembrance Day in the region

COVID-19 has caused numerous changes to Nov. 11 Remembrance Day ceremonies and traditions throughout the region.

Canal Flats

Remembrance Day Service will be held outside at the Lions Park at 10:45 a.m.

No chairs will be available so bring your own lawn chairs. Organizers will be putting into practice COVID-19 regulations and wearing of masks are recommended.

Cranbrook

Unfortunately, the general public is discouraged from attending this year.

Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. from behind the East Kootenay Credit Union and the ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at the Cenotaph.

Edgewater

Unfortunately, because of COVID-19 the general public are discouraged from attending this year.

A small ceremony will be held starting at 10:55 a.m. at Centennial Park.

The community is invited to a free lunch at the legion after the ceremony is over.

Elkford

Due to COVID-19, Elkford is not holding a Remembrance Day Service this year. Community members will still have the opportunity to support Canada’s veterans and their families by donating and supporting the initiatives of the Royal Canadian Legion.

In partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion, the District of Elkford is again facilitating the Poppy and Wreath Campaign. In contrast to previous years, however, any wreaths or crosses purchased will be laid at the Cenotaph on your behalf by district staff. The wreaths and crosses will be left out on November 11, and you are welcome to visit the Cenotaph at any time on November 11 to pay your respects individually. The district asks that you practise patience and physical distancing while doing so.

Fernie

Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 36 is holding a special Livestream event.

To comply with COVID-19 requirements and to keep vulnerable community members safe, the parade will be by vehicle this year, and both the parade and service are by invitation only. In a change to the usual practice, the service will be held at the Cemetery Cenotaph instead of at the Cenotaph at the Courthouse. Wreaths will be laid on the graves of fallen soldiers.

Legion Members are welcome at the Branch No. 36 from 10:45 a.m. – 3 p.m. to watch the Livestream. The Legion will be open to the public after 3p.m.

Invermere

The 2020 Remembrance Ceremony will be conducted live at the Invermere Cenotaph on Nov. 22.  The following outlines the plan that will allow many elements of the previously conducted ceremony to take place while working within the restrictions imposed by the current pandemic.

Kimberley

Military Ames is hosting a small service. Due to COVID-19 restrictions only 50 people may attend to allow for social distancing. Organizers are reserving spaces for veterans.

Kimberley Veteran Memorial Park will be available for the public to visit to pay respects following the service.

Sparwood

This year, the Remembrance Day ceremony will be small and attendance highly restricted with priority given to ceremony hosts, Legion personnel and veterans to maintain compliance with the ministerial order on public gatherings. Names of those purchasing wreaths will be called, and most will be laid by Legion personnel. Members of the public who would like to lay their poppies are encouraged to do so independently at another time from the ceremony, while maintaining distancing from others.

To watch live or listen, join via Zoom.
