On August 10, at 3:11 p.m., Cranbrook RCMP was called to the Wardner area for a report of someone discharging a firearm near the confluence of the Kootenay River and the Bull River, 42 kms from the City of Cranbrook.

Cranbrook RCMP responded to the area immediately upon being dispatched and attempted to locate the source of the shooting in the large rural area. RCMP members, with the help of CP Police, further attempted to locate the complainants who were on the Kootenay River in a remote location with no direct vehicle access.

The complainants, two females enjoying an afternoon river float, took shelter on the river bank believing the shots were possibly directed at them. The two subjects later reported that the shots had stopped and they carried on down the river safely to the Wardner bridge where they were met by the RCMP.

Further investigation of the incident by police has resulted in the identification of the source of the shooting and, to date, has determined that the shooting was in fact target practice on private property where there was no apparent risk to the public.
