SD5 students attend provincial speaking competition
This past weekend, five French Immersion students from School District No. 5 (SD5) travelled to Simon Fraser University to compete in the 34th annual Provincial Concours d’art oratoire, a French Language Public Speaking Competition organized by Canadian Parents for French.
Students in grades 6 through 12 compose speeches and begin competition at the local school level, with the top students moving on to the regional competition (which was held April 7, in Fernie).
The top students from each grade and category are then eligible to attend the provincial competition. More than 10,000 students from the BC/Yukon Region participate each year, with over 240 students competing at Provincials.
The top Grade 12 students can continue on to the National competition, where over $90,000 in awards and scholarships are available.
The students who represented SD5 this year were: Ben Humphrey (Grade 6 Immersion / TM Roberts Elementary School), Haylee Effray (Grade 6 Francophone / TM Roberts Elementary), Jordyn Andersson (Grade 7 Immersion / Parkland Middle School), Annelise Pageau (Grade 7 Francophone / Fernie Secondary School), Kate Brennan (Grade 9 Immersion / Fernie Secondary).
