During the evening of January 9, a mechanical failure occurred on the fan that directs low concentration odorous gases to the incinerator on the Skookumchuck Pulp Mill site.

As a result, these gases are being vented to atmosphere.

Repairs are planned for the upcoming days and parts are being rushed to site with the expected end date of the release being Monday January 13, reported Brandy Craig, Skookumchuck Mill Environmental Supervisor.

The Ministry of Environment is aware of these repairs and we will continue to communicate with the MOE until the NCG Incinerator is back to normal operation.

The mill will be monitoring ambient air quality during this venting period and has procedures in place to minimize and react to continuous air quality measurements taken at the mill’s Farstad Way ambient monitoring station.

“However, we do not expect any air quality issues due to the low concentration of these gases. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” Craig said in a media release.
