A weather event is anticipated to impact the East Kootenay over the next 24 hours.

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd.’s meteorological service is predicting snowfall of varying intensity, depending on local area.

The south of B.C. will be affected by a coastal system which is expected to deliver the heaviest intensity precipitation in areas towards the USA border. Temperatures hovering near freezing will cause a mix of rain and snow. The most precipitation is expected to fall in the Yahk-Moyie area. Grasmere border crossing (Highway 93 to Montana) may get rain.

Areas at higher elevations will get snow; the intensity of snow should be lighter towards the northern parts of the service area, Mainroad stated in a stakeholder’s update this evening (Dec. 11).

Motorists are reminded to drive with caution and to the conditions, even in areas subjected to rain rather than snow. The water left on the road surface may freeze when temperatures drop at night, causing an ice hazard, especially in such areas as shaded sections and bridge decks.

Motorists may have noticed Mainroad units proactively treating major routes with anti-icing chemicals ahead of the

event and the white chalky lines on the road surface as a result. Our crews will continue applying anti-ice chemicals and/or winter abrasive as the conditions warrant as well as perform snow removal operations where necessary.
