Environment Canada and Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting have issued special weather statements of gusty winds coming to the region.

Winds of 50-70 km/h are expected for overnight and into Wednesday morning for the region.

“A low pressure system will move across the B.C. Interior tonight and into Alberta Wednesday morning that will bring strong west to southwesterly winds over the southern interior overnight and Wednesday morning. The winds will ease Wednesday afternoon,” Mainroad reported this evening (Jan. 12).

“Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions due to high winds.

“By Wednesday afternoon, snow intensities to decrease slowly before tapering into the overnight across Crowsnest, Line Creek, and Morrissey. Line Creek and Crowsnest could see another three to six cm, and an additional trace to three cm for Morrissey. Most areas below 1,000 m will change to rain or wet snow showers while Kimberley will remain in a rain/snow mix with another slushy trace-two cm possible by Wednesday morning.

For the wind event, Mainroad crews will be patrolling the service area to remove fallen objects on the numbered highways and applying anti-icing chemicals and performing snow removal operations where necessary that will continue on all highways until the event passes and roadways are returned to the acceptable standard, the regional highways contractor stated this evening.

Additionally, Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Kootenay National Park, with snowfall amounts of 15 to 25 cm expected.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
