With the evolving world health emergency, coronavirus (COVID-19) now characterized as a pandemic, travellers can be certain their health and wellbeing is at the heart of every travel professional, locally, across the country and globally. Being in experienced and steady hands is reassuring, especially during times of uncertainty.

The definition of a pandemic is, “an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries and usually affecting a large number of people.”

The more recent flu pandemic or swine flu was an influenza pandemic that lasted from early 2009 to late 2010. There have been many other crises the worldwide: SARS, H1N1, Ebola, Zika – to site a few.

“As a travel professional of many years, I believe the human race is incredibly resilient. Like previous viruses, this too shall pass,” stated Diane Manson, owner of Mountain City Travel located in Kimberley.

Travel professionals are constantly monitoring this fluid situation. Their resources are reputable and official resources only, which is critical for current and accurate information gathering. Working with an agent is a traveller’s best resource. You have a professional you can count on while planning travel, during your travels, and in the case of an unexpected event, Manson said, adding she knows human beings are unique and will have varying perspectives about the coronavirus.

She encourages people to not be fearful. She also encourages travellers to formulate their own perspectives, extracting information from official government resources rather than from non-qualified social media.

“Keep patience, keep perspective and let common sense prevail,” are Manson’s words of advice.
