Upcoming Cranbrook to Wardner Destination Trail celebrations

The best offering of events to celebrate our trail, our region and our nation!

By David B. Savage

Imagine a ceremonial unveiling with the Ktunaxa Nation, a BBQ and concert, a shuttle, a light breakfast, grand opening ceremony, a ride or hike from various points along the 43.5 km trail, a parade into Rotary Park and joining the City of Cranbrook Canada 150 celebrations, Farmer’s Market, concert, and Laser Light Show. Imagine if you could get all that for $15 per person or $30 per family.

The events include:

  1. June 21, National Aboriginal Day ‘unveiling’ with the Ktunaxa Nation at Rampart Prairie.
  2. June 30, BBQ, Concert and Light Show (and camp over night, if you wish) at Wardner.
  3. July 1 Ribbon Cutting at Wardner, shuttles to access points, hike or ride into Cranbrook then;
  4. Join the celebration in the City of Cranbrook’s Canada Day 150 celebrations.

“The Cranbrook to Wardner Trail (C2W Trail) was an audacious undertaking and only possible through the incredible efforts of visionaries and volunteers that came up with the idea. Their hard work and determination created an amazing greenway trail completed on time for the connection of the Great Trail and Canada 150 celebrations.” – Sarah Meunier, TransCanada Trail/ The Great Trail

“The C2W trail is a unique hybrid gravelled trail, half rail trail, half 1.2-meter width enhanced single track that will be a destination trail for cyclists, appeal to hikers/walkers and will accommodate equestrian use. The trail was designed as much as possible to appeal to a wide demographic base of cyclists from families to seniors. The trail is a scenic and rustic compliment to the already popular NorthStar Rails to Trails. These two trails combined will provide the longest continuous linear network of greenway trail in the BC Interior. Thus, providing our regional communities with not only healthy active living options but as a cornerstone for our recreational trail tourism economy.” – Al Skucas, Trail Development Leader and TrailsBC.

Our C2W Trail is a world-class non-motorized trail that features ridges, switchbacks and incredible views of the Canadian Rockies in addition to being a rail to trail.

Our four celebrations in the next three weeks (Ktunaxa, Wardner BBQ and Show, Ride and hike to Cranbrook and the Cranbrook Canada 150) are one of the highlights for our region.

The C2W Trail and the Celebrations are the result of great collaboration between The Ktunaxa Nation, The Great Trail, TrailsBC, the City of Cranbrook, the Province of BC, the Regional District of East Kootenay, the communities of Wardner and Mayook, government’s Recreation Sites and Trails BC, the Alliance Church, Rotary Clubs of Cranbrook, The Lions Club, Columbia Basin Trust, the Back Country Horsemen, The Wildhorse Cycling Club, and many more.

Join our great events, register now; www.c2wtrail.ca. Registrations are limited.

If you wait, you will miss out on what is expected to be the best series of events to celebrate our new non-motorized trail, our area, our province and our nation. Really, $15 for four events, a shuttle and a souvenir! Seriously!
