Elk Valley RCMP Detachment media report contains details of investigations into damage to a kiosk set up by the Fernie Snowmobiling club; theft of tools; antique fire extinguisher discovered; youths getting a talking about setting a small bush fire; a person charged with child pornography; impaired driver ends up in court.
Elk Valley man arrested for possessing child pornography
An Elk Valley man was arrested for possessing child pornography after the Elk Valley detachment was advised by the RCMP’s Integrated Child Exploitation unit of the circumstances.
Police executed a search warrant and seized a number of computers for further examination. The man was released on strict conditions and future court date. His name will not be released at this time as criminal charges have yet to be laid.
Fernie Snowmobiling Club kiosk vandalized
Late February, person(s) damaged the kiosk at the snowmobiling club at the Coal Creek staging area. The frame building was built by the club and volunteers. The damage was made by someone presumably attaching a tow cable to the C-can storage unit inside the building and pulling it with a vehicle.

Theft of tools at construction site
On March 17, Elk Valley RCMP learned that at the construction site in Fernie between Tom Uphill Manor and Isabella Dicken Elementary School, the locks on the tool trailer were cut and numerous items were stolen. The approximate value of the tools, marked “Kimberley Electric” range from $1,500 to $2,000.

Old fire grenade turns out to be an old-style fire extinguisher
On March 21, Elk Valley RCMP responded to a unique call for service in Elkford. A family had come across what first appeared to be an old fire grenade with either carbon tetrachloride or salt water in it. The object was essentially a balloon shaped glass bottle with liquid. The understanding was that it was thrown at the base of the fire where it would act as an extinguisher. RCMP contacted the Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) and after viewing pictures, determined the object to be safe. The owners of the older style of fire extinguisher were educated on its safe ‘antique’ handling.
Youths start small brush fire
On March 22, Sparwood Fire Department requested the assistance of the Elk Valley RCMP to speak to a group of youths who had accidentally started the small brush fire, with a lighter, near Matevic Road and Highway 43. The fire was quickly extinguished by the fire department. No one was injured and there was no property damage at the scene. The parents of the youth were contacted by the Police.
Impaired driver to appear in court
On February 28, police received reports of a vehicle colliding with parked cars on Park Avenue in Fernie. Upon further investigation police determined the female driver was impaired by liquor and demanded a sample of her breath. The driver did not comply with the demand.
Criminal charges of refusing to provide a breath sample will be recommended to Crown Counsel. The driver was released on an Appearance Notice for a future court date in Fernie.
