Serious assault leads to search warrant of residence
On March 20, a Fernie male sustained serious injuries after being assaulted with a weapon and being forcibly confined in a residence. The male was able to escape and sought medical attention at the Fernie Hospital. Police executed a search warrant at a Fernie residence and seized evidence in relation to the offence.
This was an isolated incident and the RCMP continue to investigate, as well as attempt to identify suspects. RCMP are appealing to the public for any information regarding this incident. Please contact the Elk Valley RCMP at 250-425-6233 or through Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477.
Sparwood Senior Villa and vehicles victim of ongoing egging
The Seniors Villa and several vehicles have been struck with raw eggs several times over the past few months. These after-dark attacks leave behind a considerable mess that causes damage to the villas and to nearby vehicles. It is suspected that the eggs are being thrown at close range. The act of egging a home or vehicle is an act of mischief, contrary to the Criminal Code.
RCMP have not identified any suspect(s) or a specific motive, though there are suspicions. “Someone is specifically targeting the Seniors Villa (pictured above) for an unknown reason,” said Cst. Katerenchuk. “There is no doubt that persons in our community know who these culprits are.”

Backpack thief at the Canadian Tire arrested
On April 8, a male walked into the Canadian Tire and stole a red and black Rawlings R200 youth baseball backpack off the shelf. The man, captured on video surveillance, fled the store without paying. Of note was that the suspect was not wearing a mask.
Elk Valley RCMP reviewed the video and readily recognized the man who is well-known to police. The man was subsequently arrested, still in possession of the stolen backpack, slung over his shoulder. He was released on court documentation and scheduled for court in the later part of June.
