Elk Valley RCMP Detachment media report contain details of investigations into theft of tools, theft and vandalism of traffic signs, flight from police, and theft of vehicle.
Work construction tools stolen from construction site
On May 10, M. Johnston Construction Inc. reported to police that sometime between May 7 and 10, various tools and a radio was stolen from their site at Galloway Mill Road. Items taken included 7” Milwaukee Angle Grinder, 3×5” Makita Angle Grinder, 1” Makita Electric impact wrench, 1” Chicago air impact wrench, ¾” Chicago Air Impact wrench and a Motorola radio. The total value of the stolen items was roughly $5,000.00.
Theft and vandalism of traffic signs in Elkford
On May 15, Elk Valley RCMP received a report that there continues to be thefts and vandalism of traffic signs in and around Elkford. Four signs stolen have been three standard red 18” octagonal stop signs and one white 18” rectangular crosswalk sign.

Stolen vehicle recovered in Fernie
During the early morning of May 26, an Elk Valley RCMP member returning to Fernie from Sparwood observed a white Ford truck, hauling a trailer, swerving erratically on the highway, near the Ford dealership.
The officer requested for backup and the Ford vehicle was eventually pulled over. It was quickly learned that the vehicle, and the trailer were stolen from Calgary, Alberta. There were three passengers, two males and one female inside the vehicle.  The two unknown males were placed under arrest for theft of auto and no charge for the female passenger. The males were released on court documentation scheduled in July.
Vehicle stolen from Sparwood recovered after chase
On May 28, Elk Valley RCMP was alerted to a theft of a Dodge Dakota, white with blue two-tone with canopy, from the area in Sparwood. The Dodge Dakota had a three-quarter tank of gas.
On June 3, the Dodge Dakota was recovered in Calgary, Alberta, with the assistance from the Calgary Police Service, Auto Theft Team (ATT).
Two men were apprehended at or near the scene. A member from the Calgary Police Service (CPS) activated fully lit emergency equipment in order to conduct a traffic stop. The driver of the Dodge Dakota pulled over and stopped. The driver complied with patrol officers demands, exited the vehicle and was placed under arrest. The passenger slid from the passenger seat into the driver’s seat and accelerated away from the CPS patrol officers. The driver pulled into an alley way and fled on foot. The ATT located the vehicle and successfully apprehended the driver. It was also learned that the plate on the truck was stolen as well.
One male has been charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000 for the truck and plate and was released by way of an Appearance Notice.
The other male has been charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000 for the truck and plate, flight from police, dangerous driving, driving while suspended, and possession of methamphetamine, break and enter tools, Breaches, Breach of firearms prohibition and drive with no insurance.
