Elkford Council News

Bear Aware

Kathy Murray, Bear Aware Community Coordinator, appeared before District of Elkford council Sept. 10 as a delegation to discuss the issue of habituated food conditioned bears in Elkford.  She commended the District on the efforts made to educate the community and on the non-lethal bear management techniques used by the Conservation Officer, Fire Chief and the Bylaw Officer to move the bears out of town.  However, there are currently several bears in town because they are able to readily access garbage from residential bins.

These bears may be destroyed or relocated if this problem continues.

Figure Skating Club

Council approved the free use of the Elkford Recreation Centre Banquet Hall for the Elkford Figure Skating Club for one hour per week of off-ice training from October to December.

Campground shower building

Elkford Municipal Campground will receive yet another improvement.  A new shower building will replace the old one and MDG Contracting Services out of Sparwood was the successful proponent for the project.  Previous improvements included installation of a fence at the back edge of the campground, creation of a maintenance area at the north end of the campground, and installation of two prefabricated pit utility toilets.  Next year the district plans to improve the electrical system.
