Elkford recognized with national FireSmart award

The District of Elkford has been recognized with the FireSmart Canada Community Protection Achievement Award. This award recognizes Canadian communities that are dedicated to reducing wildfire risks and have begun implementing FireSmart solutions with the goal of increasing public safety.

The FireSmart Canada Community Recognition Program was designed in 2012 to encourage communities to work together toward solutions for wildfire safety. Since 2006, the District of Elkford has made wildfire risk a priority and has taken a strategic approach to mitigating risk in the community.

Elkford developed its Community Wildfire Protection Plan and invested in urban wildland interface fuel treatment, reduction and mitigation. These activities have resulted in fire preventative measures, further protecting Elkford from the threat of wildfire.

“Mayor, council, staff and residents continue to support these prevention initiatives. This valued support ensures Elkford is appropriately prepared in prevention activities when it comes to the threat of wildfires. We are very fortunate to be recognized for our hard work over the years. I am blessed to be able to accept this Firesmart Canada award on behalf of the district,” stated Corey Kortmeyer, Director, Fire Rescue and Emergency Services.

Mayor Dean McKerracher added: “the District of Elkford is extremely proud to join the ranks of other FireSmart-recognized communities in British Columbia and across Canada. We are committed to continued efforts to keep our community safe from wildfire.”
