Expanded hours coming to Elkford Transfer Station

Elkford residents will soon be able to enjoy increased access to the Elkford Transfer Station as the site hours are being expanded.

“Starting on May 1, we will be moving from being open four days a week to six days a week,” said Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Environmental Services Manager Kevin Paterson. “This will not only increase access to the site for garbage disposal, but more importantly, increase access to the Recycle BC Depot along with other recycling and diversion opportunities on site.”

The new hours of operation will be Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Elkford Transfer Station will be closed on Sundays, BC Family Day, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Increasing access to the new Recycle BC Depot was a major factor in increasing the hours as the RDEK is urging residents to utilize the new system as much as possible.

“The Recycle BC Depots at the Elkford, Sparwood and Fernie Transfer Stations do represent a change over the old yellow bin system; however, there are substantial benefits to using the new system. The more volume we can drive into those depots, the better,” added Paterson. The Recycle BC Depots accept over 76 more items than the yellow bins, including a wide range of plastics, cartons, and Styrofoam packaging. Plus, the RDEK is paid as a collector for every tonne of material collected in the Depots. By contrast, the yellow bin system costs over $325/tonne for all material collected and is more difficult to find markets for the products.

The RDEK will be doing an education program throughout the spring and summer to help provide tips and tricks on reducing, reusing and recycling in the East Kootenay.
