Mine truck tire explosion caused injury

Elk Valley RCMP reported that a recent workplace injury suffered by a contract employee at Teck Coal’s Greenhills Operation stemmed from a 66,000 lb. mine truck tire explosion.

On January 28, at approximately 12:30 p.m., a male was seriously injured on the job site, which required the immediate response of Mine Rescue Operations and B.C. Ambulance.

STARS Air Ambulance (pictured) transported the worker to Calgary Foothills Hospital.

The accident occurred when the male was changing a tire on a 66,000 lb. Maxam truck, when it appears the tire exploded, said Cst. Debra Katerenchuk, Elk Valley RCMP Media Relations Officer.

The worker is currently in serious condition, suffering from head injuries and a broken arm.

“RCMP continues the investigation into this very unfortunate accident in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources,” Cst. Katerenchuk said.
