Ways to beat pandemic cabin fever in Elkford

With last week’s announcement that B.C. is extending the current COVID-19 restrictions into February, we’d like to thank our community for the diligence you’ve shown and ask you to continue doing your part to protect your friends, family and neighbours.

Similarly, the District of Elkford will continue working hard to serve you safely during this pandemic and offer as many services and programs as we can.

It’s easy to feel discouraged during dark times, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. If you’re struggling with cabin fever, here are some fun, family-friendly ways to beat the winter blues in Elkford:

  • WINTER WALKING—bundle up, dig out your snowshoes or strap on some cleats and trek along the cleared trails. Some local gems include Bare Hill Lookout, Josephine Falls, the river walk and Boivin Creek (pictured).
  • SKATING—Elkford Recreation Centre continues to provide public skating sessions. For more information, contact 250-865-4010 or [email protected].
  • SWIMMING—Elkford Aquatic Centre is offering public swimming, lane swimming and swim lessons. For more information, or to register, contact 250-865-4012 or [email protected].
  • SNOWBOARDING AND SKIING—Wapiti Ski Hill is open for the season! Bust out your board, or your skis, and glide into that fresh pow!
  • CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING—for a more laidback approach to winter sports, try cross-country skiing and experience the tranquility of a winter wonderland with breathtaking backcountry views. Whether you prefer Nordic, telemark, alpine or classic cross-country skiing, any of Elkford’s trails are a treat! Visit Elkford Nordic Ski Club for more info.
  • SNOWMOBILING—haul your sled to the trails and BRAAAP! Just a friendly reminder to carry your up-to-date permit and plates, copy of your insurance and to keep your sledding adventures close to home until these restrictions are lifted. Visit HERE

for more information.

No matter how you enjoy the great outdoors this winter, we ask that you practise physical distancing, stick to your household bubble and follow the Leave No Trace principles of outdoor ethics. Always let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to return; avalanche activity in the backcountry is high, and everyone is required to monitor current conditions, pack adequate safety gear and be prepared for emergencies.

Most importantly, get out there and have some fun!
