City closing trail sections due to high water

The City of Fernie has (May 31) issued an advisory that water levels are currently at seasonal high for the Elk River and above seasonal high for Coal Creek.

For public safety we have closed some sections of trail that are impacted by high water levels including: The Town Loop from the Dogwood Park Boat Launch to Pine Ave. Bridge, and Pine Ave. Bridge to Cokato Rd., sections in James White Park, and Maiden Lake to the Fernie RV Park.

We are also asking the public to stay away from the Montane parking lot until we have been able to contact the private landowner to have it closed,” the city stated on social media.

“City crews continue to monitor water levels, and are following the protocols set out in our Flood Response Plan.

“For your safety, please respect all signage and closures and exercise extreme caution around fast moving water.”
