City roads and utilities replacement program underway

The City of Fernie has announced this year’s roads and utilities works program, getting underway today, June 18.

As part of its annual works program, the City of Fernie will be rehabilitating: 4th Avenue from 7th Street to 11th Street; 11th Street from 3rd Ave to 5th Ave; and 10th Street from 2nd Ave Lane to 4th Ave.

The works will be constructed by BA Blacktop and Bob Mitchell Excavating and will commence on June 18 and continue until approximately August 30.

“To ensure public safety, roads will be periodically closed to general traffic. Through traffic will be maintained for emergency vehicles where possible. Detour routes will be in place. Residential street parking during this time will be restricted to the adjacent avenues and lanes. Please obey posted construction signage and barricades,” the city outlined.

The infrastructure improvements feature:

  • Concrete sidewalk on west side 4thAvenue between 8thStreet and 11th Street;
  • New roadway pavement;
  • Improved roadway drainage through installation of stormwater infrastructure;
  • Gravel parking lanes;
  • Replacement of water and sewer mains in 2ndAve lane, 3rdAve lane, and 10th Street in blocks highlighted in above map.
