Community EcoGarden Open House August 23

We are celebrating the harvest season in Fernie and learning more about how our gardens form an integral part of the natural environment and food sustainability now and for the future.

On Thursday, August 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the EcoGarden in Fernieā€™s Prentice Park (entrance and parking 1300-block of 5th Avenue), speakers will tour the gardens with us and demonstrate the fascinating topics of native plants, saving vegetable seed, and making compost.

Grow Me Instead! Jessie Paloposki of the East Kootenay Invasive Species Council (EKISC) will present this free workshop to inform gardeners about our most ā€œunwantedā€ invasive plants. Whether you are adding new, attractive plants to your garden or removing invasive plants, this presentation will be a valuable resource.

If you have something growing in your garden that you’re not sure of, bring along a clipping to ID.

Introduction to Seed Saving – Mary Cosman of the EcoGarden and Our Cold Climate Seed Library will share tips on planning your gardens for saving seeds from your favourite plants, essential information for producing good seed, and why seed saving is so important.

Composting Basics – Gaetane Carignan of Naturaleza Ag will cover basic information on how to make good compost, answer questions and show you how the successful EcoGarden composting system works.

PLANTS FOR SALE EKISC will bring a selection of ā€œnative alternativesā€ bedding plants for purchase by donation.

BOOKS!

  • EKISC Plant ID book $5;
  • Making Good Compost manual $5;
  • How to Save your own Seeds $15.
