Community gathers to open outdoor rink
It was a community gathering Fernie needed.
Hundreds of people skated and mingled on the ice and around the outdoor rink located beside the Fernie Aquatic Centre Dec. 21, taking part in the official grand opening.
The National Hockey League-sized rink, built courtesy the Calgary Flames Foundation, NHL, Canadian Arena Products, the Fernie Lions Club and numerous community donors.
City of Fernie Mayor Mary Giuliano said “it was a great opening” and praised the facility sponsors and community volunteers for helping make this latest recreational amenity a reality.
Local minor hockey players and figure skaters, as well as the Fernie Ghostriders took spins on the ice, while people gathered around bonfires and availed themselves to hot dogs and hot chocolate thanks to the Fernie Lions Club concession.
Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka also attended the opening.
“This is turning lemons into lemonade after the horrific tragedy that took the lives of Wayne, Lloyd and Jason; three great men at the Fernie Arena last October. Thanks to the City of Fernie, the Calgary Flames and the many volunteers in making this happen,” he stated on Facebook.
