Fernie launches Phase 2 engagement on ATMP

The City of Fernie is launching Phase 2 of public engagement on the Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP).

The ATMP, once finalized, will function as a long-range strategic plan to guide the vision for and investment in a multi- modal transportation network throughout the city.

The long-term plan will prioritize and encourage walking as the first choice for short trips, as well as cycling/rolling access to schools, businesses, and recreation facilities while accommodating growth in vehicle traffic as required for economic sustainability and community development patterns.

The plan will establish simplified street classification, provide guidance on street design, and incorporate information about road speeds and safety to enhance neighbourhood environments and minimize conflicts between street users.

The key benefits of the completed plan will include more desirable and varied transportation options for the public, a transportation system that is sustainable over time, and the provisioning of mobility options that will benefit the health and safety of all citizens and the natural environment.

Phase 2 engagement will gauge community support for a pedestrian, rolling, and cycling network comprised of separated and shared routes, suggested changes to road cross-sections, possible improvements to rail crossings, and overall public sentiment regarding future improvements to the Highway 3 corridor.

Residents are encouraged to go HERE until May 3 for more information and to complete the survey and map their concerns. Paper copies of the survey may be picked up at City Hall.

The engineering consultant, Bunt & Associates, supported by city staff, will be hosting a virtual public information and Q&A event on April 27, starting at 5 p.m.

Finally, general feedback can also be sent to [email protected] with “ATMP” in the subject line.
