Two injured in July 2 explosion/fire in Fernie

Two workers were injured, one seriously, in a work site incident in downtown Fernie July 2.

On July 2, around 5:30 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP, Fernie Fire Department and the B.C. Ambulance Service responded to an explosion/fire on a roof top in downtown Fernie.

A roofing company was in the process of “torching” on a waterproof membrane. The blast/fire occurred as a result of two employees using a torch when the attached propane tank fell over. One individual was treated at the Fernie Hospital and has now been released. The other employee was transported to a Calgary hospital with more serious injuries.

No other injuries were reported or any threat to the public.  No nearby buildings were affected by the blast/fire.

The investigation continues with the Elk Valley RCMP working closely with WorkSafeBC.

“RCMP would like to thank Fernie Fire Department and the B.C. Ambulance Service for their quick response and assistance with this incident,” said Cst. Debra Katerenchuk of Elk Valley RCMP.
