Local man killed in Highway 43 crash

On Saturday, January 11, at approximately 8:20 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 43 near Intata Road, about five kilometres south of Elkford, that took the life of a local man.

Upon arrival it was determined that a southbound Pontiac lost control, entered the opposing lane where it collided with a northbound Ford pickup truck.

The driver of the Pontiac, a man in his 20s from the East Kootenay, died at the scene. The driver of the Ford pickup, a man in his 30s, also from the East Kootenay, was transported to hospital with minor injuries, RCMP reported this morning (Jan. 13).

East Kootenay Traffic Services (EKTS) has assumed conduct of this fatal crash. At this time, speed and weather conditions are being considered as possible contributing factors.

Police believe there was a witness to this crash that left the scene prior to arrival of emergency services. Police would like that person or persons to identify themselves to investigators as they may hold important information.

Anyone with information regarding this crash that has not spoken with police is asked to contact EKTS in Cranbrook at 250-420-4244 and quote file 2020-158.
