Potential criminal charges after New Year’s shooting

Elk Valley RCMP are continuing their investigation into an altercation that escalated to an alleged shooting, which sent one man to hospital.

In the early morning hours of January 1, Elk Valley RCMP responded to a report of a physical altercation between two men inside a Fernie area residence. During the altercation, one of the men sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to a lower limb.

The man received medical attention and has since been released from hospital.

The other man involved was taken into police custody without incident at the scene. He faces potential criminal charges and has since been released from police custody pending further investigation.

“Investigators believe that the shooting arose from a previous altercation, earlier that evening at the Fernie Community Centre,” stated Cst. Debra Katerenchuk, spokeswoman for the Elk Valley RCMP. “We have since executed a search warrant at the residence where the shooting occurred.”

As this was an isolated incident, there was no risk to the public.

If there are any witnesses to the earlier altercation at the Community Centre, please contact the Elk Valley RCMP at (250) 425-6233 or if you wish to remain anonymous, please contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
