Severe thunderstorm warning for Elk Valley

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Elk Valley.

Radar indicates that a severe thunderstorm over Highway 3 near Crowsnest is moving northeastward at a speed of 45 km/h.

“Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles,” Environment Canada stated in its warning.

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting also issued an alert to stakeholders this evening, noting the severe thunderstorm could be capable of producing strong wind gusts and up to nickel size hail.

Thunderstorms will continue crossing southern portions of the Elk Valley this evening. Areas near Morrissey and the Flathead Valley can expect nickel size hail and the potential for strong wind gusts.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports using #BCStorm.

“The anticipated heavy rain and hail may cause deteriorating road conditions and other road hazards, such as minor flooding and washouts; and high winds can cause downed tree branches and power lines, and other hazards,” Mainroad stated.
