District shutters leisure centre

Mayor David Wilks

District of Sparwood Mayor and council March 15 agreed to close the Henry Volkmann Memorial leisure Centre due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns.

“This decision was not taken lightly. However, for the safety of our employees and the general public the facility will stay closed until such time as this pandemic is under control,” stated Mayor David Wilks via Facebook.

He added in a message to district residents he will continue to use his Facebook page to do daily updates to provide information that may be of interest to people.

“Also, I would strongly encourage everyone to check on the elderly who are most vulnerable. Whether in person or by phone it is a good way to stay in contact with loved ones. Thank you for your understanding and co-operation and please stay safe,” he concluded.

Editor’s note: We previously reported that volunteers were being sought at the Sparwood Health Centre. Please note that they are NOT looking for volunteers. We apologize for this error.
