EAO hosting coal mine proposal open house

The B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) is hosting a public house covering North Coal Limited’s proposed Michel Coal Mine on August 1 in Sparwood.

North Coal Limited is proposing to develop Michel Coal Mine, projected to mine between 2.3 to four million tonnes of raw coal per year for up to 30 years.

The proposed project, located southeast of Sparwood, is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act and, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. North Coal must obtain an environmental assessment certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed project.

However, prior to submission of an application for a certificate by North Coal, the EAO must first approve the Application Information Requirements. Key to the Application Information Requirements is the identification of valued components to be studied and the areas within which the studies would occur. This is done through the valued components proposal which EAO has now received and invites comments on.

To provide information about the draft valued components proposal, the EAO invites the public to attend an open house at the Sparwood Seniors Centre (101 4th Avenue- next to Lilac Terrace Seniors Housing) on August 1 from 4 to 8 p.m.
