Firefighters, volunteers acknowledged for efforts
On the heels of last night’s apartment fire in Sparwood Heights, the District of Sparwood’s mayor is acknowledging the tremendous efforts by the district’s firefighters and a host of community volunteers.
“Our firefighters train week in and week out to respond to calls, and their professionalism and skill was evident last night,” said Mayor Cal McDougall. “We are so grateful to all the members who responded and worked so hard to contain the blaze to one building. They did an incredible job under very trying circumstances.”
As firefighters focused their efforts on fighting the fire, members of the community opened their hearts and homes to those who were evacuated. “We are just blown away by the tremendous outpouring of support from this community and we can’t thank everyone enough,” added McDougall. “Our community is going to need to continue to pull together to help those affected and I am so proud of the way everyone is rallying to support our residents in need.”
Several people immediately opened up their homes as billets and the district is still looking for additional short-term lodging options. Anyone who may be able to billet families or who has an RV they would be willing to let affected residents use in the short term is asked to email details to [email protected].
McDougall is also extending the district’s appreciation to Elkford Fire & Emergency Services, which sent a truck and five firefighters, along with Interior Health, the City of Fernie, Regional District of East Kootenay and ESS volunteers from Elkford.
“This is a small town with big heart. I want those who jumped into action last night and those who are continuing to offer their support to know how much their efforts are appreciated,” added McDougall. “And, for those who have been directly impacted by this tragedy, we will continue to support you through this difficult time.”
