Sparwood archery range grand opening today

The District of Sparwood is pleased to announce the completion of a 10-target, 70-yard archery range located at the Sparwood Golf Club.

A grand opening ceremony will take place at 6 p.m on August 25. BC Games silver medalist Lane Ogden will be joined by other local youth archers for a ceremonial ‘ribbon shoot.’

This will be followed by Archery discussion and demonstrations, as well as a youth shoot.

Sparwood Fish and Wildlife will host a by-donation barbecue.

The $60,000 fenced and irrigated archery range is a gift from Youth Action Sparwood to the community, which is located on grounds generously provided by the Sparwood Golf Club Society and managed by the Sparwood Fish and Wildlife Association Archery Committee who run youth archery programs.

The range will be open and be free for use by all members of the Sparwood Fish and Wildlife Association. The archery range will also address the specific needs of youth, as it was the second highest (after camping) activity of interest expressed by Sparwood youth aged 12 to 18 in a 2018 survey.

The District of Sparwood committed a grant-in-aid to kick off fundraising, gave legal and project management support, and passed a bylaw to allow for an archery range within the area.

“The opening of the Sparwood Archery Range is yet another example of volunteers coming together,” said David Wilks, Mayor of Sparwood. “This provides yet another great facility for those who are or would like to learn about the sport of archery.”
