Sparwood council facts
The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Sept. 3 District of Sparwood council meeting.
DELEGATION
Elk River Alliance
Beth Millions, representing Elk River Alliance (ERA), provided an update to council on the Sparwood Beaver Wetland Project. The focus of the project is on wetland health assessment, invasive species removal, revegetation with native plant species, community engagement and education.
Students from Frank J Mitchell and Sparwood Secondary schools have been removing noxious weeds and planting native vegetation; interpretative signs have been installed; wetland/riparian health assessment has been completed; and the Elk River Interpretive Trail was opened in November of 2017.
The ERA requested that the District of Sparwood maintain and eventually remove an exclusion fence that ERA will install to deter browsing on the young shrubs being planted to shade out the reed canary grass. Staff was directed to bring recommendations for councilās consideration at the September 17 regular meeting.
BUSINESS
Pine Avenue & Engelmann Spruce Drive Intersection
A request from Colleen Morandini to have stop signs reinstalled at the south Pine Avenue / Engelmann Spruce Drive intersection (by Firehall #1) was referred to staff to provide recommendations for councilās consideration at the September 17 regular meeting.

Off Leash Dog Park
The District of Sparwood is excited to announce that construction is underway on the off-leash dog park. The park, located at 441 Pine Avenue, will provide a safe space for dogs and their owners to enjoy off leash exercise in open grass spaces and forested trails. Friends of the Sparwood Dog Park volunteer group would like to thank the District of Sparwood, Teck, Columbia Basin Trust, the Elk Valley Thrift Shop, Husky, Sarahās Dog Spaw, and community members that have supported them through this process. They couldnāt have done it without you!
Mine Rescue Competition
Mayor David Wilks and members of council would like to welcome all teams competing in the National Western Regional Mine Rescue Competition in Fernie September 5- 7.
