Sparwood Council Facts
The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Oct. 15 District of Sparwood council meeting.
BUSINESS
Leisure Centre Concession Lease
Council reconsidered their decision to decline a request from Putters Grill to waive the concession lease payments for November 2019, December 2019, July 2020 and August 2020 and authorized that payments of $500 per month be waived for July and August of 2020 provided the concession is closed during those months.
Cemeteries Master Plan
Council adopted a Cemeteries Master Plan that includes short, medium and long-term goals to help meet the needs of the community for both of the district’s cemeteries. The primary objectives of the plan include: Analyze the district’s interment requirements and identify how to meet future needs; Develop strategies for sustainable management, operation and maintenance of the cemeteries; Review and assess the operational management of the cemeteries; Enhance the role of the cemeteries as a public open space and park; and recognize and maintain the culture and heritage of the sites.

Launch of Vulnerable Persons Registry
The District of Sparwood has just launched a Vulnerable Persons Registry (VPR). This voluntary registry will ensure that first responders and emergency social services teams are better prepared to provide proper assistance to vulnerable persons in the event of an emergency.
The VPR is intended for individuals who due to their age, illness, trauma, disability or another reason are unable to take care of themselves or protect themselves against harm.
The data collected will be reviewed and updated on a bi-annual basis by staff. However, the data for anyone on the registry who is under 16-years of age will be reviewed annually. Registration is 100% voluntary and free.
Individuals can register online at www.sparwood.ca/vpr or they can complete the form, which was delivered to every household through Canada Post and return it to the District Office in person or by mail.
Another tool at the hands of residents is the Evacuation Notification System (ENS) launched by the Regional District of East Kootenay earlier this summer and powered by Voyent Alert! The ENS will help keep residents and property owners informed of any evacuation orders or alerts issued during critical events such as wildfires, floods or hazardous materials incidents. The ENS allows users to pin multiple locations and will send out notifications to anyone with pins in defined order/alert areas via text, phone calls (both landline and cell) and for smartphone users, via a dedicated app on their phones.
