Sparwood Council Facts
The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Nov. 19 District of Sparwood council meeting.
BUSINESS
Recreation Land Use Permits – Sunset Ridge Ski Society
Council authorized issuance of a five-year recreation land use permit to the Sunset Ridge Ski Society for development of additional cross-country ski trails south of the Sparwood Golf Course. The permit will allow the society to remove fallen trees and brush and make improvements to the road surfaces.
Sparwood Trails Alliance
Council authorized issuance of a five-year recreation land use permit to the Sparwood Trails Alliance (STA) for development of trails around the Disc Golf Course, Westwood, Cypress Trail and powerline areas in Sparwood Heights. The STA will be developing permanent trails, which will include the creation of trail beds, limbing and brushing.
Donations in Lieu of Christmas Cards Policy
Council amended the Public Relations – Donations in Lieu of Christmas Cards Policy by increasing the donation to the Sparwood Food Bank and Sparwood Toys for Tots from $250 to $500 to be effective in 2020. In 2003, council adopted a policy that in lieu of the $500 expended on purchasing and mailing Christmas cards to various provincial ministries and municipalities in the Kootenay region that a donation be made to a local charitable group, organization, family or individual. The policy was amended in 2011 to split this donation between the Sparwood Food Bank and Sparwood Toys for Tots. The amount of the donation has remained unchanged since 2003.
Columbia Basin Institute of Regional History
Council authorized Mayor David Wilks to provide a letter of support to the Columbia Basin Institute of Regional History for submission with their application for funding to support the digitization and preservation of Sparwood, Fernie and Elkford school yearbooks.
Deputy Emergency Support Services Director
Council appointed Traci Allen as the Deputy Emergency Support Services Director and authorized the Mayor and Corporate Officer to execute the agreement for Ms. Allen’s volunteer services. Emergency Support Services (ESS) is a municipal emergency response program which provides for the various short-term needs of evacuees and response workers in a disaster or emergency situation.

2030 Sparwood Recreation
The District of Sparwood is undertaking a very important project: The Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Input from the community is the foundation of the plan. Without you we cannot make this project successful. Please take a few minutes and complete an on-line survey.
Canadian Pacific Holiday Train
The 2019 Canadian Pacific Holiday Train is coming to Sparwood on December 11 at 3:10 p.m. behind the Leisure Centre.
More Canadians than ever are turning to food banks for support. Help make a difference in our community by bringing a cash or food donation to this year’s Holiday train. This year the train features Terri Clark and Dallas Smith.
