Sparwood Council Facts

RCMP – Elk Valley Detachment

Cpl. Dave Williams of the Elk Valley RCMP Detachment presented the Third Quarter Mayor’s Report for 2012 to District of Sparwood council Nov. 19. The RCMP received 358 calls for service in Sparwood from July 1 to September 30. This is a decrease in calls from 469 over the same period last year.

Cpl. Williams also introduced Sgt. Will Thien, who has transferred to the Elk Valley from the Lower Mainland and will be replacing Sgt. Dave Dubnyk who has transferred to Sicamous.

Canadian Home Builders’ Association Rocky Mountain

Mr. Simon Howse made a presentation to council on the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of BC (CHBA BC). The association was founded in 1967 and represents over 1,700 companies across B.C.

The presentation outlined benefits of being a member of CHBA BC and what can be accomplished by working with local and provincial governments.

Coal Town Properties – Vantage Point Sign

Council gave approval for a Vantage Point sign to be placed at 1800 Sparwood Heights Drive. Approval was also granted for an extension for two existing signs located at 6000 Highway 43 and 1302 Highway 3 until June 30, 2013.

BC Climate Action Charter

Staff was directed to establish a Carbon Neutral Reserve Fund as a step toward meeting the District’s Climate Action Charter commitments. This fund will be established with the equivalent funds that would have been used to purchase carbon offsets for 2012, as well as annual Climate Action Reduction Incentive Program grants received by the district. A number of actions have been taken towards meeting the Charter commitments such as retrofitting energy intensive facilities, toilet rebate program, Water Smart Ambassador program, LED street light conversion, solar lighting on some trails, completion of the Iron Rails Bridge connecting Sparwood Heights to Sparwood Proper, and water metering program.

Winter Parking for Snow and Ice Control

During the winter months, the district’s snow clearing teams are busy working to keep your roads safe and clear for motorists, pedestrians, and public transit.

The district’s snow plows cannot deliver their best service when vehicles are parked on highways, roadways or lanes. The district asks you to please park your vehicle(s) in your driveway as soon as the snow begins to fall – empty streets enable snow plows to do a better job and ensures room for sanding equipment to cover more space.

To achieve efficiencies in snow removal and to reduce unequal windrow distribution while plowing, on-street parking will be prohibited from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. October 1 to March 31.

Residents should note that:

– Parking on the street during snow plowing, snow removal, snow hauling, or sanding operations is prohibited;

– It is an offence to push, place or throw or allow to be pushed, placed or thrown any snow or ice upon a highway or lane;

– That no advance warning is required under the bylaw and the Motor Vehicle Act and offending vehicles will be towed. Please make appropriate arrangements for parking your vehicles.

Please be a snow buddy in your neighbourhood this winter

Many of our senior citizens and persons with disabilities find it difficult to remove the snow from their driveways in the wintertime. Please look around your neighbourhood and lend a helping hand to those who may not be able to clear their own driveways.

It’s the neighbourly thing to do and one of the things that make Sparwood such a great community in which to live.

At the end of the winter season the district accepts nominations from residents for their ‘Snow Buddy,’ who will be recognized at a council meeting.
