Sparwood Council Facts

Council sworn in

The 2011-2014 District of Sparwood mayor and councillors were Dec. 5 sworn into office by Mr. Glen Purdy, barrister and solicitor.  Mayor Lois Halko gave her Inaugural Address thanking all those who voted in the municipal election.  Mayor Halko is joined on council by Harold Baytaluke, Sharon Fraser, Andy MacIntyre, Margaret McKie, Ron Saad, and Joanne Wilton.

East Kootenay Community Credit Union

Mr. Eric Johnstone of East Kootenay Community Credit Union advised Council that the Credit Union has a temporary office open in the old RCMP building on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  They are hoping to hold a grand opening of their offices mid February.  The EKCCU is currently running a ‘Nominate Your Neighbour’ campaign to tell the stories of people who make Sparwood a truly great place to live.  Another program the Credit Union is sponsoring is the ‘Community Award.’  More information on both of these programs is available on their web site at www.ekccu.com.

TD Green Streets – Tree Canada

Council supported a grant application to TD Green Streets – Tree Canada program for funding to assist with the development of an 18-hole disc golf (Frisbee golf) course in Sparwood Heights.

BC Hydro Tree Canada Program

Council supported an application to the 2012 BC Hydro Tree Canada program in the amount of $21,000 with a net cost to the District of $11,000 to be funded through the Forest Health Reserve Fund.  The District has been working to restore and beautify community green spaces by replanting trees within the community.

Federation of Canadian Municipalities

Council adopted a policy regarding attendance at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Annual Conference and Trade Show.  All Members of council will be provided an opportunity to attend the conference once during their term.

Whitewood Crescent

In 2007 lots on Whitewood Crescent were sold with the condition that building must commence within three years of purchasing the property.  As of September 30, 2011 there were six of these lots without building permits.  The District has now purchased the lots back for the original sale price, in accordance with the term of the option to purchase.  Staff will return to council at a future meeting to discuss pricing and options for consideration.

Toilet Rebate Program – 2012

The Toilet Rebate Program will continue for 2012 with the addition of commercial units and the rebate amount changed to the actual amount of the toilet before any applicable taxes, not to exceed $100.

Public Health Nurse Reduction of Services

A letter will be sent to Interior Health supporting Sparwood Early Childhood Committee’s concerns about the reduction of services to the Public Health Nurse in Sparwood.

Bylaws

The following bylaws were all introduced and given three readings:

– Upper Elk Valley Fire Protection Services Authorization Bylaw 1037, 2010, Amendment Bylaw 1082, 2011 (This amendment excludes two properties that are more than 13 km from the closest fire hall in Sparwood.)

–  Land Sales Reserve Expenditure Bylaw 1083, 2011.

– Capital Works, Machinery and Equipment Reserve Expenditure Bylaw 1084, 2011

– Street Repaving Reserve Fund Expenditure Bylaw 1085, 2011

–  Recreational/Cultural Capital Works Reserve Expenditure Bylaw 1086, 2011

– Waterworks System Reserve Fund Expenditure Bylaw 1087, 2011

– Sewer System Reserve Fund Expenditure Bylaw 1088, 2011 Financial Plan (2011-2015) Bylaw 1067, 2011, Amendment Bylaw 1081, 2011 was adopted.

CANADIAN PACIFIC HOLIDAY TRAIN

December 11, 3:15 p.m. at the Leisure Centre

The 2011 Canadian Pacific Holiday Train is coming to Sparwood!  More Canadians than ever are turning to food banks for support.  Help make a difference in our community by bringing a cash or food donation to this year’s Holiday Train.  This year the train features performances by Valdy, Tracey Brown and Brothers Dube.

Looking for Fun and Healthy Stocking Stuffers and Gifts?

Give the gift of health and enjoyment!  Gift certificates for a multitude of activities, programs, and passes are available, in any denomination, through the Sparwood Recreation Department.  Call or visit the Recreation Centre for more information.

Santa is coming 

Elk Valley children, Santa is checking his list and wants you to know that he is coming to see you: At the Greenwood Mall on Wednesday, December  14, from 3 – 5:30 p.m.

So parents, be sure to bring your camera to take your child’s picture with Santa. Mrs. Claus and one of Santa’s elves will be there with treats for the kids!
