Sparwood Fire Department hosts Chip or Burn event

Firefighters and residents beat the winter weather by warming up around a bonfire during the Chip or Burn event held in Sparwood last weekend.

Discarded Christmas trees were taken to Fire Hall #2 where some trees were bound for the bonfire and some were set aside to be chipped by the Public Works Department. During the event the Fire Department presented holiday fire safety demonstrations, discussed live Christmas tree care and home safety and served hot chocolate to all those in attendance.

The Chip or Burn event was designed not only to be a fun community gathering, but also a way to help manage discarded Christmas trees and keep them out of the landfill. Woodchips generated from the trees will be utilized in trail maintenance and landscaping within the municipality this summer.

The Sparwood Fire Department thanks residents for attending and donating during the event. Over $65 was raised for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
