Winter storm warning for Elk Valley
Environment Canada this afternoon issued a winter storm warning for the Elk Valley, with up to 40 cm forecast for the Fernie area.
While the warning only includes the Elk Valley, other areas of the region are expected to receive varying amounts of snow.
A Pacific frontal system will move across the B.C. interior tonight through Friday. Snow is expected to intensify overnight and persist through Friday.
Total snow accumulations of 10 to 20 cm except 40 cm near Fernie can be expected before the snow tapers off to a few flurries early Saturday morning.
Hazardous winter conditions are expected
Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd. also issued an alert to stakeholders, noting a weather event is anticipated to impact the East Kootenay within the next 12 to 36 hours.
Mainroadās meteorological service is predicting snowfall of varying intensity, depending on location.
A round of light snow starting late tonight and will continue through to Saturday afternoon.Ā A general four to eight centimetres is expected across the region with wind gusts and the heaviest snowfall amounts in the Elk Valley area.
Motorists may notice Mainroad units throughout the afternoon, evening, and all day tomorrow.
āWe will be proactively treating major routes with anti-icing chemicals ahead of the event arriving, where conditions allow.Ā Our crews will continue applying salt and/or winter abrasive, and performing snow removal operations, where necessary,ā Mainroad said.
Motorists should expect unsettled weather, drive to the prevailing conditions, and prepare for delays caused by the weather.
