Winter storm watch issued for Elk Valley
Environment Canada has today (Dec. 20) issued a winter storm watch in effect for the Elk Valley covering Dec. 21 and 22.
“A deepening Pacific low will make its way across Washington state on Monday. Abundant moisture associated with the system combined with cold air to the north of its trajectory will produce heavy snowfall across the southern interior of British Columbia,” Environment Canada reported.
Snow will begin Monday morning and intensify Monday evening. It will taper off by Tuesday morning. Snowfall amounts will range from 25 to 35 cm.
Environment Canada suggests avoiding travel if possible. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
The winter storm watch does not include the other areas of the East Kootenay, which are expected to get varying amounts of snow.
The Columbia Valley can expected between two to four cm (in the valley), while Cranbrook/Kimberley is expected to receive between five and 10 cm.
