The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the March 13 District of Elkford council meeting.

CanAus Coal Ltd. update

John Pumphrey provided an update on the CanAus mining project located in the neighbourhood of Coal Mountain Operations. The company continues to perform exploratory work in preparation for the construction of the mine. This includes exploration drilling, engineering alternatives, environmental management, and community, government, and First Nations consultation and engagement.

2017/18 policing priorities

Council identified the following policing priorities for the community of Elkford: Drugs and alcohol; Traffic violations: Speeding in Elkford and on Highway 43; Illegal use of all off-road vehicles; Drinking and driving; Unlicensed/uninsured vehicles; Police presence in the community; and school visits including canine presentations. Elkford’s input will be incorporated in the preparation of the Elk Valley RCMP Detachment’s Annual Performance Plan.

Elk Valley Trail

Council reviewed the Elk Valley Trail Season End Report. Between Elkford and Sulphur Springs 2.3 km of new trail was constructed and 8.5 km of Mountain Walk Trail was upgraded and rerouted. Mountain Walk required significant re-routing due to damage from mud bogging; the public is reminded to use the trails responsibly and respect non-motorized trails.

Bylaws

Freedom of Information Amendment Bylaw No. 799, 2017 was adopted. This amendment will provide updated and proper authority to process requests for access to records.
