City receives national award for annual report

City of Kimberley Corporate Administration and Finance Departments were recognized this week as they were awarded the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for the Annual Report from the Government Finance Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).

The reporting program was established to encourage municipal governments to publish high-quality financial reports and to provide peer recognition and technical guidance for officials preparing the reports. The attainment of this award represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

At the February 25 regular council meeting, Mayor Don McCormick presented Chief Administrative Officer Scott Sommerville, Chief Financial Officer Jim Hendricks, Corporate Officer Maryse Leroux and Executive Assistant Nicole Thurman with the plaque and congratulated city staff on the achievement (pictured above).

“I’m very proud of my staff. We’ve worked for the last five years at making the annual report better each year. We really want to encourage people to read it, so hopefully, this award brings attention to what great staff we have working here. Also, it’s such a great tool to understand the community and get a better grasp on the finances and the plans for the future,” said CAO Sommerville.

Out of 162 municipalities in B.C., 32 in total have received this recognition from the GFOA, with the City of Kimberley being one of the smallest communities to receive the award.
