City staging large scale emergency exercise
On Thursday, May 23, the City of Kimberley will conduct a mock emergency management exercise to enhance staff training and evaluate interagency response to major incidents.
The exercise will begin at 11 a.m. at 400 Jim Ogilvie Way and will run until approximately 2 p.m. The mock exercise includes a school bus rollover and involves multiple simulated injuries. The exercise will lead to the establishment of a fully-staffed departmental emergency operations centre and coordination with School District No. 6.
Jim Ogilvie Way will be closed to regular traffic from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 23. Residents may notice signs of the exercise throughout the day.
“As part of our commitment to effectively manage emergencies within our community, the City of Kimberley is coordinating a mock emergency that exercises the capabilities of key agencies,” said Fire Chief Rick Prasad.
“The event we have planned requires that these key agencies work together not only during the operation but on communication and planning. This community has an experienced, highly trained, and extremely capable group of emergency managers and responders. This exercise allows for those agencies and personnel to put our systems to the test,” he said.
This exercise has been coordinated over several months through a working group led by the City of Kimberley Fire Department / Emergency Program. The Emergency Program supports municipal efforts to prepare for, respond to and recover from major emergencies and disasters.
The exercise will involve City of Kimberley staff from a variety of departments, the Fire Department, as well as external stakeholders, including RCMP, BC Ambulance Service, School District No. 6, Interior Health, Teck Ltd. and East Kootenay Search and Rescue.
