From the silvery Slocan Valley comes rhythm and blues songwriter, vocalist and bass guitarist Holly Hyatt with her five-piece band for the second Live@Studio 64 fall concert on October 19.

Holly has been entertaining audiences throughout the B.C. interior and far beyond for many years, originally as part of the blues duo, Holly & Jon, with her father, blues guitarist extraordinaire, Jon Burden, more recently under her own name but with dad still conspicuous in her back-up band.

It will not be Holly’s first visit to Kimberley. She and Jon performed on the Platzl stage on more than one festive occasion during the past 14 years – but it will be her first full concert in the community under her own name and with a full band.

“There are five of us,” she says: “Bass/vocals, keys, sax/flute, guitar and drums. A mix of Soul, Blues, R&B and Funk with a little bit of jazziness.” Holly, of course, is the bass/vocals artist, Jack Toforo is the keyboard man, Clinton Swanson plays sax and flute and also provides backing vocals, Jon Burden is on guitar and Steve Wilson is the drummer. The show has been described as “fun, funky, danceable blues” so you might want to bring your dancing shoes to this one.

Holly released her debut solo album, Wild Heart, this April, following hot on the heels of her single release, River Flows, in the fall of 2018. River Flows won Best Rhythm & Blues song at the 2019 Kootenay Music Awards and has received rave reviews.

Wild Heart is a full band production about which American music publication, Elmore Magazine stated: “From Canada comes Holly Hyatt, a young lady with one of those surprisingly spirited releases that simply crosses musical divides with an understated simplicity and style. Funky, blues-infused stuff, Hyatt’s soulful delivery is nicely matched by some stinging soul-based backing.”

Of Holly herself, Elmore Magazine states: “Hyatt is one of those young blues singers who is likely to be compared with Bonnie Raitt, with an equally fervent voice and vocal delivery that always works her music hard and clean, with just the right raw touches around the edges.” Wild Heart has remained on the Roots Music Report soul/blues radio charts to the present day.

For the first time since the Live@Studio 64 concert series began in 2013, a local artist will open for the headline band, playing in the gallery from doors opening at 7 p.m. to the start of the main concert at 8.

This has been made possible with a grant from the BC Touring Council, BC Arts Council, and the Government of BC. Opening for Holly Hyatt on October 19 will be Kimberley singer/songwriter/guitarist, Darren Welch.
