Brownbag Lunch with Mayor McCormick
On Wednesday, December 14th, and on the second Wednesday of each month, Mayor Don McCormick will host a brown-bag luncheon at City Hall from noon until 1:30 p.m. Bring your lunch and have a discussion with the Mayor.
FREE Downtown Shuttle
The Peak to Platzl downtown shuttle is a free scheduled service between the ski resort base area, the upper-mountain accommodations, and the downtown shops, pubs and restaurants. The shuttle service operates every day (except statutory holidays) from December 27 until April 2, 2017. The shuttle will run on the Friday schedule for extended hours on New Year’s Eve! 2017 Dog Licenses
A common phrase heard at city hall is “Why should I license my dog? My dog never gets out of the yard!” You would be surprised at the different ways a dog can end up running at large, and this can cost you a pocket full of cash. When dealing with dogs at large, the goal of the Animal Control Officer is to reduce the amount of stress experienced when a dog is impounded. If your dog is licensed you will receive a phone call, your dog will not need to be transferred to the Cranbrook-based BC SPCA East Kootenay branch, and your faithful pal can be returned home. The welfare of your dog is of utmost importance to us, and avoiding a trip to the pound is the best thing for your pet.
The 2017 dog licenses are now on sale at city hall and the cost for a spayed or neutered dog license is only $22. The fines for an unlicensed dog are as follows: $100 for the first offence, and $200 for each subsequent offence thereafter. Please help our Animal Control Officer make sure your pet gets home without a trip to the SPCA, and license your dog today!
Slow Down for Safety
Please remember to lower your speed to match road conditions. No matter how much driving experience you have, the way your vehicle will move on snow or ice is unpredictable. The posted speed is the maximum speed for ideal conditions. Avoid making sudden moves on winter roads, and steer smoothly to avoid skidding. For more tips on winter driving please visit HERE.
Clearing Snow and Ice
Icy sidewalks can be a hazard for everyone including seniors, children, mail carriers, meter readers, firefighters, and paramedics. As the weather warms up and then freezes again, water from melting snow can run onto cleared sidewalks. Here are a few tips to help maintain your walkways:
– Warmer weather during the day can make ice soft, so it’s easier to chip or shovel away.
– Spread sand or gravel on icy patches to make your sidewalk safer for pedestrians. Spreading sand on a sidewalk before ice forms can also make future ice easier to remove.
– Microwaving sand in a microwave-safe container and spreading it while it is still warm will make the sand embed itself into the ice, creating a gritty top layer.
– Pile snow in a place where it will not run across your sidewalk when it melts and aim your downspouts away from areas where people walk.
Free Family Swim
Come to the Aquatic Centre and enjoy a free family swim on Wednesday, December 14 from 6 to 7 p.m., sponsored by Western Financial Group. Please remember that all persons 18 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult in the water.
Christmas Break Camps
Do you need some kid-free holiday prep time? Do the Kids need a break from the holiday rush? Drop them off at the Aquatic Centre for a fun filled day of inside/outside games, crafts, swimming and more! December 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, & 30 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for ages 4 to 10. The price is $45 per day. Drop by the Aquatic Centre or call 250-427-2983 for registration and details.
