Victoria Day Weekend Closure
Kimberley City Hall and the Public Works Yard will be closed on Monday, May 20. The Aquatic Centre will be open for a Public Swim from 1 – 4 p.m. Have a great long weekend!
Local Government Awareness Week May 20-26
Local governments play a key role in providing citizens, businesses, and communities with the essential services they need to prosper and thrive. Safe drinking water, wastewater management, streets, sidewalks, libraries, land-use planning, fire and police protection, recreation and parks are just some of the important benefits that B.C.’s local governments help support in order to foster strong, successful communities.
A few interesting quick facts about local governments are:
- There are 189 local governments in British Columbia, including 162 municipalities and 27 incorporated regional districts.
- The Community Charter (Bill 14, 2003) is the first local government legislation in Canada to establish a full set of principles for municipal-provincial relations.
- Under the Community Charter and the Local Government Act, local governments have broad authority to provide any service that their respective council or board considers necessary or desirable, including water, sewer, garbage disposal, recreation, child care, and economic development.
- The Local Government Act provides a legal framework and foundation for local governments. It provides local governments with powers, duties and functions – and with the flexibility to respond to the diverse needs and changing circumstances of their communities.
Arena Ice Allocation Meeting
All organizations/groups requesting to utilize the City of Kimberley Civic Centre and/or Marysville Arena’s ice for the 2018-2019 season are to attend the ice allocation meeting. Public Works Day
Please join us for an open house at the Public Works Yard located at 250 Knighton Road on Thursday, May 23, from 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. This is a kid-friendly event and everyone is welcome to attend. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served for lunch starting at 11 a.m. National Public Works Week (May 19-25) is to help increase public awareness of the contributions made by Public Works professionals who maintain and improve the systems and services vital to a community’s health, safety, and comfort.
Boulevards
The Operations Department would like to remind residents that in accordance with the “City of Kimberley Streets and Traffic Bylaw No. 1877, 1995”, it is your responsibility to look after your boulevard. A person being the owner or occupier of land shall:
508.1: cut grass and weeds on the boulevard abutting that person’s property; and
508.2: keep in good repair and up to city standards, driveways crossing the boulevard abutting that person’s property.

Animal Control Reminders
With the weather warming up, please do not leave your pets in vehicles or tethered outside in the heat. Animals confined in an unventilated vehicle can quickly succumb to the high temperatures and die of heat stroke. Please leave your animals at home where they will be more comfortable. The MTI Bylaw No. 2540, Animal Control Schedule Section 10, allows for a $150 fine for animals left in an enclosed space or unventilated vehicle. Let’s keep our dogs safe this summer!
Remember to pick up your dog’s excrement when walking your dog, including walking paths, trails and in the Platzl! There are receptacles with bag dispensers in several locations throughout the city. If you notice that the bag holder is empty, contact the Animal Control Officer at 250-427-6460. Please be conscientious of everyone who uses the trails and walking paths, as no one likes to step in dog doo!
The Animal Control Officer would like to remind dog owners that your dog must be on leash at all times within the City of Kimberley, except for when you are using the designated off leash areas. Non-compliance with section 20 of the Animal Control Bylaw No. 2544, 2016 may result in a fine of $75 for a first offence and $150 for each subsequent offence. The Kimberley Nature Park, Lois Creek Trails and the Marysville Flats are all designated off-leash spaces to exercise your furry friends.
