Summer theatre returning to Kimberley

Summer theatre is back.

In 2019 the theatre scene in Kimberley will come alive with the sights and sounds of live professional theatre. The Kimberley Arts Council is thrilled to announce that it is picking up where the Kimberley Summer Theatre Society left off in 2013.

“We are very excited about the prospect of having the energy of theatre on our stage again,” said Lennan Delaney, president of the Kimberley Arts Council. “We are working hard on re-energizing theatre in Kimberley, and it will be known as Kimberley Summer Playhouse.”

Having live theatre in the downtown area will help to boost summer traffic in the Platzl.

There will be two shows, one musical and one comedy. Both productions run from June 27 to August 30, running alternately from Tuesday to Friday evening with an afternoon matinee on Thursdays.

The musical is The Last Five Years, a show that features solo songs and a lovely story, told in a very enchanting manner. Audiences will be really pleased with this show.

The comedy is Mark Twain’s The Diary of Adam and Eve, and you can be assured that Mark Twain will have an interesting way of looking at this. It sounds like this will be a great summer to see these two shows, to spend time at Centre 64, maybe more than once.

“We are so fortunate to have the Centre 64 here in Kimberley. It’s comfortably air conditioned and now we’ve added an elevator and made it fully accessible,” said Mr. Delaney.

With the help of funding from Columbia Basin Trust, the group at the Arts Council installed the elevator in 2018.

The Arts Council have been working on the Summer Theatre project for almost a year and have already contracted with professional directors, actors and a producer. There are another ten contracts to be awarded, hopefully all to local people. Delaney says to watch the media, our Facebook page and website for announcements very soon.

“This will be the place to be this summer,” said Delaney.
