Team Buchy earns spot in Mixed Curling Championship

Seven teams from across the province have qualified for the 2020 AMJ Campbell BC Mixed Curling Championship, including Team Buchy from Kimberley.

The Buchy rink skipped by Tom Buchy is rounded out by Tom’s daughter Kaila, the 2019 U18 girls’ champion and Canadian bronze medalist and 2020 Junior Women’s champion. Dave Toffolo, who along with Tom has won four BC Mixed titles, plays second. Katelyn McGillivray, also from the Kaila Buchy team that won this year’s junior provincials, plays lead.

The triple-knockout event will take place at Abbotsford Curling Club from April 1-5. It features teams made up of two men and two women playing the traditional curling format over eight ends.

Playdowns in Nanaimo, Maple Ridge (Golden Ears), Kelowna and Fernie qualified the seven teams. One more team will earn the final berth at a playdown being held in Abbotsford from Mar. 6-8.

Curling is a great sport for families to play together and this event is a good example of that. The Abbotsford provincial will feature two teams with father-daughter teammates and a team with husband and wife teammates.

The winner will go on to represent B.C. at the championship scheduled for Nov. 7-15, 2020, at the Canmore Golf and Curling Club.
