Iron Legs Pentathlon a success

By Chris Newel

Six teams and seven individuals skied, ran, biked and climbed to victory as part of Iron Legs Pentathlon held Saturday, March 26 at Kimberley Alpine Resort.

A climbing component was added to the event this year, thanks to Spirit Rock Climbing Centre.

Approximately 35 participants completed the course either individually or part of a team. The race began at the top of Kimberley Alpine Resort, where participants skied down the hill to the Kimberley Nordic Club. A quick transition from down hill to cross-country gear and they were off on a challenging five km ski. Next throw on a pair of runners and run down Gerry Sorenson Way (4.2km) to the Platzl and into the Spirit Rock Climbing Centre.

Participants had the choice of climbing routes, but you had to complete the easy one six times, or the hardest one twice. After that it was onto the bike and ride back up Gerry Sorenson Way to KAR plaza.

The amazing part, three youth teams; yes, kids under the age of 15 competed. The winning youth team, Killer B’s did it in an impressive; 1:02 they were five girls between nine and 12 years old; the other two youth teams were not far behind. Individual male and female winners were Brent Jossy and Talia Christianson. Overall team winner, Kimbo Iron Gals. Two young brothers, Jonas and Noah both competed in the individual youth under 15 and had an impressive finish.

Talia has been competing in the race since the age of four she says, “It’s a fantastic event and the addition of the climbing leg added to the challenge. The staff of Spirit Rock did an amazing job.”

Race organizer Meegan Field said, “The event went very well, we had great weather and we would especially like to thank all the volunteers who helped out.”

A wonderful victory for all the participants.

Congratulations!
