Local clubs heading for KIJHL playoffs
The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) schedule winds down to the Feb. 21 regular season finale, with the East Kootenay clubs already having locked down playoff spots in the Eddie Mountain Division.
The KIJHL leading Kimberley Dynamiters, defending champions, have four games remaining in the regular season, while the third and fourth place (Eddie Mountain Division) Fernie Ghostriders and Columbia Valley Rockies also have four tilts left.
The Dynamiters have racked up an impressive 37 wins, seven losses, four overtime losses record, with a +87 differential of goals for and against.
Leading the charge for the Nitros this season is Eric Buckley, with 22 goals and 41 helpers, good for fourth overall in the league.
Not far behind, in sixth and seventh in league scoring are fellow Nitros Jordan Busch, the top scoring defenceman in the league with eight goals and 54 assists and Jared Marchi (27-34-61).
Secure in second in the Eddie is the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, with a 29-14-two tie and two overtime loss record.
Just ahead in third is the Ghostriders with a 26-17-four overtime losses record, two points ahead of the Rockies sporting a 27-20 record. Pacing the Riders this season is centre Cole Keebler (27-31-58 in just 30 games).
Powering the Rockies this season is dynamic forward Michael Cardinal, with 30 goals and 39 assists. He’s one point shy of KIJHL scoring leader Rainer Glimpel of the Osoyoos Coyotes.
The Golden Rockets are bringing up the rear in the Eddie and KIJHL with a 4-39-1-3 record.
Remaining games
The Rockies play Golden this evening in the Golden Arena.
On Friday (Feb. 12) the Rockies and Ghostriders clash in the Fernie Memorial Arena, while the Dynamiters are south of the line, taking on the Spokane Braves at the Spokane Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
The Nitros are back home Saturday for a match-up against the Ghostriders, while the Rockies take on the Rockets at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena.
Rounding out the weekend play for East Kootenay clubs is the Ghostriders hosting the Rockets at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Fernie.
The Rockies take on the Thunder Cats in Invermere Feb. 19, while the Ghostriders head to Beaver Valley for a clash with the Nitehawks and the Dynamiters head north to take on Golden.
The final tilts of the 2015/16 KIJHL regular season for local clubs will take place Feb. 20, with the Rockies heading to Creston and the Nitros traveling to Fernie.
