Black Friday will be a good day to be a shopper
The Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce and a host of businesses in the Key City are banding together to provide Christmas shoppers with a whack of savings on Friday, Nov. 22 during the third annual Black Friday Event.
More than 40 businesses have already signed up with a wide range of specials and sales to be rolled out.
Black Friday chair Joey Hoechsmann urges business owners and residents to take part in the event as it supports local businesses and the local economy.
“As a business owner or retailer, you have opportunities here,” said Hoechsmann, pictured above with his Bedroom Furniture staff during last year’s Black Friday.
City of Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski has also been active in promoting the event, wearing a Black Friday t-shirt in public and hanging it in front of him during the Nov. 4 city council meeting.
Black Friday has become a ‘shop local’ rally, with both Cranbrook and Fernie chambers of commerce hosting events. Fernie’s Black Friday is Nov. 29, with 35 participating businesses thus far.
Regional shoppers commonly trek to Calgary, Lethbridge, Montana, Idaho and Washington in search of savings but most times people don’t factor the costs of travel, with gas, accommodations, food and incidentals eradicating any savings that may be realized.
Safety – with travel on regional highways always an adventure in November and December – is another factor that consumers should consider.
Black Friday derives from the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the U.S., often considered the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.
According to Wikipedia, “The day’s name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving.”
