Border jumper confirmed as American

A man who jumped the US/Canada border in a stolen pickup truck Feb. 17 has been confirmed as a U.S. citizen.

KingsgateAt about 11:20 a.m. last Wednesday, RCMP detachments in the vicinity of the Kingsgate Border Crossing were alerted to an incident in which a man ran the border.

The stolen vehicle was spotted by Commercial Vehicle Inspectors at Yahk heading towards Cranbrook. Cranbrook RCMP and East Kootenay Traffic Services members spotted the vehicle on Highway 3 near Silver Springs Road, performed a safe pull-over and arrested the lone occupant for entering into Canada unlawfully; possession of stolen property; and driving offences.

Cranbrook RCMP Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant Hector Lee this morning confirmed the arrested individual is a U.S. citizen.

“He was charged under the . He is still currently in custody and being dealt with by Canada Border Services Agency,” Lee said, noting that agency is handling the process for deportation.

“Cranbrook RCMP are not pursuing criminal charges related to the stolen vehicle as there is a likelihood that American authorities will pursue similar charge in their jurisdiction,” Lee said.
