Family Fun Derby lives up to name
When unseasonably warm weather made it too risky to hold the annual Family Fishing Derby for Kids with Cancer on Horseshoe Lake, JCI Kootenay volunteers had to scramble to find a new ‘angle’ for the community fundraiser.
Instead of a fishing derby, organizers staged the Family Fun Derby at Fort Steele Heritage Town on Sunday March 1.
From 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Junior Chamber International (JCI Kootenay) volunteers, with the help from Fort Steele personnel, turned the heritage treasure into a large family fun getaway.
A host of games and contests were held, including a bean bag toss, ‘mystery catch,’ tugs of war and more. There was also arts and crafts, Giant Jenga, an adult casting contest, a silent auction, scavenger hunt and food courtesy Tim Hortons.
In addition there was two showings of Penguins of Madagascar at Wildhorse Theatre.
Cranbrook Search and Rescue was also on hand to assist with any first aid needs and to meet and greet the public.
Proceeds from the event support local children and families facing cancer through the Canadian Cancer Society’s support programs.
